Finding Your Power

Life as a busy parent can feel overwhelming. Between running kids to school and soothing colds throughout the night, it can be hard to focus on yourself and find your inner power to move forward. A few years ago, I started feeling beaten-down and depressed. To work out my problems, I decided to try counseling. I was absolutely amazed with the difference it made in my life. After I had the opportunity to talk with someone, I learned ways to cope with my daily routine. The goal of my website is to help other people to understand that there is a great life out there, and that counseling can help you to find your way.

What Is A Psychological Test, And Do You Need One?

If you're struggling with various aspects of your life and feel depressed, anxious, or off, you might visit your doctor for help. If your doctor suspects a mental illness of any kind, they might recommend getting a psychological test. You might wonder what this is and if you need one.

Keep reading this guide to learn more about psychological testing—what it is, and how to determine if you might need one.

What is psychological testing?

Psychological testing is a common service today, and you can get this completed by visiting a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist. This test measures various aspects of a person's thinking. For example, it measures how a person thinks, feels, and acts. It studies the person's behavior to assess their personality, thinking, and mental state.

The person administering the test asks questions. For example, they might ask the following questions:

  • How often do you feel depressed?
  • Do you have suicidal thoughts?
  • Do you ever have trouble sleeping?

These are just a few of the basic questions a psychologist asks when performing this assessment, but there are many others. In most cases, the questions have multiple-choice answers. For example, they might ask you to answer with one of the following options: never, rarely, sometimes, often, always.

The psychologist calculates the answers at the end of the test to determine if the person has a mental illness or condition.

Why do you need one?

So, why would you need a psychological test? People often get these when they sense problems in their lives. In other cases, people need them for court purposes. There are numerous reasons for getting them, but one common reason is to get medication.

For example, suppose you feel anxious and depressed all the time. If you can't seem to break this feeling yourself, you might decide to try medication. However, your doctor might not agree to medication without a psychological evaluation. Therefore, you must get this assessment completed before you can get the medication you need. Medication is not right for everyone, but it can be helpful for many people who struggle with depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems.
